Reader Remarks on:

Improve Bones and Blood Pressure with Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate vs osteoporosis

Russell M Bimber, retired 1991, now age 80, 13 Aug 2009 2:06 PM EST

Competing interests: None declared

Medical workers have been hypothesizing since 1960 that alkalizing materials like potassium citrate in the diet can help prevent metabolic acid attacking bone, causing osteoporosis. I'm a retired chemist, and think it should be expected. I saw a continuing medical education article a few years ago that convinced me it worked. I began preparing my own potassium citrate solutions and supplementing with about 30 mEQ daily two years ago. I've had no ill effects. I had a BMD DEXA scan the month before starting, but no further test.
