Table 1. Recommendations for Reducing CMV-Infection Risk During Pregnancy

For women who are pregnant or might become pregnant (CDC):
Wash hands often, especially after contact with diapers or young children’s saliva.
Do not kiss children younger than 6 on the mouth or cheek; give hugs instead.
Do not share food, drinks, or eating utensils with young children.
For OB/GYNs (ACOG):
Advise careful handling of diapers and other potentially infected items.
Advise thorough hand washing, especially for women with young children.
Explain the importance of hygiene in preventing CMV infection.
