Protects mucosa by binding to inflamed tissue; rarely used (not approved for GERD)
Promotility agents
Of limited utility due to adverse effects
H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs)
Inhibit acid secretion by blocking mucosal histamine receptors
Agents: cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid)
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
Inhibit acid secretion by blocking proton pumps
Agents: omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex), pantoprazole (Protonix), esomeprazole (Nexium)
